Magnificent copper wheel engraved vase features a Polar Bear descending an ice flow. The thick walled, heavy crystal vase likely a Kosta blank measures approximately 6.50" tall x 4.375" wide x 3.25" deep.
The Kjellander family has been associated with the glass engraving business since the 18th century and the Kjellander name has become synonymous with glass engraving of the highest standard.
Lars Kjellander was a designer and engraver for Kosta from about 1881 to 1925 eventually becoming Director of their engraving department while working closely with renown artists such as Gunnar Wennerberg. Lars continued to favor Kosta blanks to produce his copper wheel engraved masterpieces even after leaving Kosta. Lar's brothers also produced superb quality copper wheel decorated vases working together at their family business.
This example is signed, "Kjellander 489-337" and "Made in Sweden". Circa first half twentieth century. Scratch just about bear's back and tiny nick under foot, all else is looks good. The reverse side of the vase is decorated with a stylized floral motif of leafy foliage emanating from the base.
This is a wonderful, scarce decoration ~ beautifully rendered by a highly respected and collected glass decorating name.
