An antique Italian carved green serpentine stone figure of a sitting dog after the antique models, referred to as- The Hound of Alcibiades, The Jennings Dog and The Duncombe Dog.
The original Molossian guard dog itself a Roman copy of the (2nd century AD) Hellenistic bronze. The Roman model was named after its original modern owner, Henry Constantine Jennings, who bought it in Rome about 1753, and subsequently sold it at Phillips Auction around 1778 to settle a gambling debt with Sir Charles Duncombe being the successful high bidder.
Measures approximately 6.125 inches tall x 4.5 inches deep x 3 inches wide. Good condition with no major issues.
