Important patinated bronze sculpture by Tulsa native artist Jay O’Meilia is an amalgamation honoring Oklahoma’s five American Indian ballerinas, Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, Moscelyne Larkin, Maria Tallchief and Marjorie Tallchief. All five women were leading dancers during the 1940’s with premier ballet companies such as the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Grand Ballet de Marquis de Cuevas, and the New York Ballet.
In reduced scale, this is an exact model of the sculpture that stands in the plaza next to Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center which was erected in 1982 celebrating the 75th anniversary of Oklahoma’s statehood.
From a very small edition size this is number four of thirty. And, today these models are quite scarce. Signed in the bronze by the artist, Jay O’Meilia. Mounted on a dark green marble base. Circa: 1980’s. Dimensions: approximately 21” tallest x 14” long x 7”wide.
