Bulgarian born artist Assen Peikov (1908 – 1973) framed bronze plaque depicting Saint Francis of Assisi, San Francesco d' Assisi.
Measures approximately overall, 20.75” tall x 7.75” wide. Bronze only measures approximately 15.3” x 2.3”. Signed in bas relief at side, Assen Peikov Roma 68. Framed on green velvet board with gilt wood frame.
Among his works is a giant statue of Leonardo da Vinci at Rome’s Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci Airport (1960). In 2006 the enormous bronze statue was discovered to have a secret compartment containing two parchments – one in classical Latin chronicling the history of the airport’s area beginning in ancient times, and the other parchment listing the attendees of the unveiling of the bronze including Giovanni Gronchi (President of the Italian Republic in 1960), and Giulio Andreotti (Minister of Defense in 1960 who would go on to become Prime Minister).
