A nice example of English Victorian mourning jewellery, this bracelet is unusual in it's simple, classic design of oval segments, graduating in size and threaded onto black elastic. Fashioned from individual pieces of Whitby Jet and dating to the mid to late 1800s, the bracelet looks amazing on the wrist and is in lovely condition for a piece of this age - it has just one tiny area of wear to one of the oval segments. It is elasticated and so will fit most wrist sizes, with 7 - 8 inches being the optimum. The bracelet graduates in width from 1.75 inches to 0.75 inch. Whitby Jet is fossilized plant matter, millions of years old, and is cut from the cliffs at Whitby in Yorkshire, England; the only place in the world where this fossil is found. And it was much loved and worn by Queen Victoria who set the fashion for wearing jewellery made from Whitby Jet.
