A fabulous antique English Georgian pinchbeck and enamel buckle, dating to the early 1800s, and in excellent condition. In rich, golden pinchbeck, which for all the world looks and feels like solid, high carat gold, the buckle is simply but beautifully decorated with a band of turquoise blue enamel, between two narrow bands of white enamel. Pinchbeck is an alloy of copper and zinc, created in the eighteenth century by Christopher Pinchbeck, an English watchmaker, as a substitute for gold at a time when gold was scarce and expensive. Pinchbeck itself is now rare and collectible, and still fools many into believing it is, indeed, pure gold. This large buckle is in superb original condition, having no chips or damage at all, and just one tiny black spot in the white enamel, which would appear to be an air bubble that occurred during the firing. The buckle measures 3.3 by 2.75 inches. A beautiful and rare piece from the very early 1800s, and a wonderful addition to any collection.
