This is the nicest and best example of a late Victorian picture locket that I have ever seen. Dating to the late 1800s it is in excellent original condition. In silver gilt, and suspended from a solid 9 carat gold chain, the circular pendant is set with paste stones around a glass-covered picture compartment. The pastes are set in silver. Inside the picture compartment is a hand coloured photograph of a beautiful Victorian lady. The lady can clearly be seen to be wearing what appears to be this very locket.
The reverse of the locket has a second picture compartment, smaller in size, and having a rose gilt border. This compartment holds a very faded photograph of a gentleman. The locket measures just over 1 inch in diameter, and is almost 0.25 inch deep, front to back. It comes on the original Victorian 9 carat rose gold chain, which measures 17.5 inches in length and has a slide-tube clasp. The chain is marked for solid 9 carat gold. Altogether a fabulous and rare example of Victorian sentimental jewelry, and in superb original condition. The photograph has some creasing, which must be expected after all this time, but is still in beautiful condition, and the portrait is clear and defined; the pastes are all clean and bright, and sparkle just like real diamonds, especially in poor light, which is exactly as the maker intended. Pastes were developed to imitate diamonds, coming to life and full of fire in the candlelit evenings of the nineteenth century. The pendant wears beautifully, looking stunning around the neck - and the photograph of the beautiful Victorian lady makes this such a rare and intriguing piece.
