A stunningly beautiful antique English Victorian necklace, dating to the mid 1800s, and in superb condition. Featuring a long row of hand-cut, carved Whitby Jet beads, threaded onto black silk or cotton, and, suspended from the centre, a stunning, large, Whitby Jet pendant locket. The bead necklace is 26.75 inches in length, and features hand-cut round beads and rectangular beads, and the black silk is knotted between each bead. The clasp is a black-painted brass metal tubular box and tongue clasp. Suspended from the centre of the necklace is a large, gold-mounted Whitby jet locket. The locket is set to the centre with a solid gold crest of crown and feathers, and this is set with seed-pearls. The back of the locket has a gold framed picture window, with the original glass. This would have contained a lock of hair, or an image of a loved one. The locket measures 1.8 by 1.5 inches, and is 0.25 inch deep, front to back. The depth including the gold and pearl motif is 0.375 inch. Often worn as mourning jewelry, Whitby Jet was very popular with Victorian ladies, and especially so with Queen Victoria, after the death of her beloved husband Albert. Altogether a superb and very rare antique jet necklace and pendant, and condition is superb. The locket pendant has retained it's high polished finish, as have all of the beads. A beautiful and very wearable antique necklace that has been very well cared for over the years. This piece can be seen on page 193 of the book "Gemstones" by Arthur Thomas.
