A superb and beautiful antique late Georgian or very early Victorian brooch, dating to the first half of the 1800s, and in excellent original condition. Featuring a large oval of white chalcedony agate, mounted in silver gilt, and decorated with deep purple amethyst and turquoise gemstones. The chalcedony oval is set with a central motif of silver gilt and amethyst and turquoise gemstones. Suspended beneath the brooch is a dropper of silver gilt, set with a pear-shaped amethyst and tiny turquoise gemstones. Attached to the dropper are two short lengths of silver gilt curb-link chain, each one forming a festoon which is attached at the other end to the side of the brooch, and having a delightful little dropper of turquoise. The brooch measures 1 7/8" wide, and 2 1/4" top to bottom, including the dropper. The silver pin has a "c" clasp. Condition is excellent and original, although the smaller of the amethysts is showing signs of wear - there are surface scratches and the facet edges are worn with age. In solid silver, gilded with gold, the brooch is a superb and rare example of late Georgian / early Victorian jewelry, all hand-made, and absolutely stunning. Not marked that I can see, other than the maker's hand-written marks on the gilded silver.
