Silhouette from the early turn of the century occupies this antique frame of the same period. The black and white pen and ink work at the back of head and hair line is so well done. The size of the frame is 13 x 15 inches while the oval opening is 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches. The beautiful original mat has been replaced within the last few years because there are no edge marks on the lovely mat which is cut from what looks like linen (very fine linen I might add) The frame is black painted on the very exterior edge and front 1/4" while the first inside border is swirls of brunt umber, black and white....sort of a pearl look. Inside that coloring is a scratched into the gesso rendering of flowers and vine. The remainder of the surrounding frame alternates between a off-white border and black or umber recessed areas. Too beautiful to describe. This work of art is signed SAJ and I cannot find a silhouette artist signing by this name listed. Enjoy. It is quite a catch for the collector of black and white silhouettes. This item comes from an estate in Pennsylvania.
