Crossed rifles are common on military headstones. They are not specific to a branch of military and are used to denote a veteran, usually an officer. Upside down crossed rifles are a symbol of mourning, as "the rifle that will not again be fired". I believe that the crossed rifles in this brooch are Confederate Muscat Rifles. The details are very fine, with red and clear stones on each. Up close you can clearly see every detail you'd see on a full size rifle. This is approximately 1 3/4" X 1". The back is signed both "Crown Trifari" and "Sterling", all of which has had a gold colored wash. This brooch is perfect in every way!
