"If These Walls Could Speak" Historic Forts Of Texas, paintings by J. U. Salvant and text by Robert M. Utley. Published by University of Texas Press, First edition, 1985.

In this fascinating book, artist J. U. Salvant and writer Robert M. Utley join their considerable talents to produce this rare volume: a book as lovely as it is accurate and as readable as it is informative. The artist's graceful watercolors afford glimpses of ten key military posts that kept watch over the westward-advancing frontier of Texas during the pioneer decades of the nineteenth century. Her artistry captures the range of habitations in which U.S. soldiers were quartered-the rude jacales of Fort Richardson, the flimsy huts of Fort Lancaster, the solid brick barracks with deep-shadowed verandas of Fort McIntosh. Vividly she shows the officers homes that passed for elegant on the remote frontier, the hospitals, the storehouses and warehouses, the places where troops worshiped and as at Fort Davis held court for want of more suitable space. Also included are the structures of Fort Brown, the Ringgold Barracks, Fort McKavett, Fort Griffin, Fort Concho, and Fort Bliss. Not merely architectural detail emerges; her portrayals evoke the mood of the time and hint at the engrossing adventures that must have unfolded within the fort walls.

Author Utley provides a historical vignette to accompany the pictures of each of the ten forts. Not only setting the stage for the system of Texas forts and placing them in their natural context, he also breathes life into the pioneers of that great land called Texas.

64 page hard cover book in excellent condition with no rips or tears. The only writing is an inscription by the artist and author on the half title page. (Merry Christmas 1985 to Bert- J U Salvant, Robert Utley). The dust jacket is nice with only minor wear.
