Frances Hogson Burnett was a born storyteller, and even when she was a young child living in Manchester, England, her greatest pleasure was in making up stories and acting them out, using her dolls as characters. When she was in her teens her family, in search of fortune, moved to Tennessee and there young Frances had her first taste of success, for two of her stories were bought and published by an American magazine. From that point on her career was assured and until her death in 1924 she wrote constantly and produced more than forty books and countless short stories.
