"Katy Did" written by Jessie G. Thomas and illustrated by Dave Lyons. Published by Pageant Press, copyright 1952, stated first edition. Signed on dedicated page and inscribed on the first page of the book.
"Whoo? Whoo? Why, Katydid, of course. So say all the Jay Birds. But Professor I. Q. Owl has his doubts, for if Katydid, why she?
Two small girls, Dolly and Lollie, and their cook, Lillie Lou, are important to the solution of the mystery, as the reader will discover. So is Mrs. Snoopy, poor Mrs. Snoopy, who always has a big, luscious cake in her cupboard but doesn't have any friends because she can't stop gossiping. That as everyone knows, is not a nice thing to do. And then there is Mr. O.U. Wolf, the victim of much of Mrs. Snoopy's gossip, who although rich is very lonely-which only goes to prove that you must get to know people before your judge them."
That is the basic theme of this delightful children's poem, in which a colorful collection of characters have been woven into a wholesome, carefree tale which will appeal to children and, incidentally, amuse their elders. In Katydid, Mrs. Thomas has combined fantasy and fact, mimicry and morality, in such judicious quantities that youngsters are bound to enjoy, laugh at, and remember both the story and the aim behind it.
