"Unidentified Flying Elephant" story by Robert Kraus with illustrations by Whitney Darrow, Jr.. Published by Windmill Books, copyright 1968, first printing.
"Arthur, an elephant with a telescope, sees an unidentified flying object that turns out to be an unidentified flying elephant named X-22. X-22 is looking for his flying saucer. He cannot eat without it, and if he doesn't, he won't glow (he is fluorescent). And if he doesn't glow, he'll be in the dark (and he's afraid of the dark). Arthur helps X-22 hunt for the flying saucer and the two elephants have many adventures with earth animals, Martians, a strange king from outer space, the man in the moon, and Honest Tom, the antique flying saucer collector. But the great saucer hunt is successful and all's well that ends well-on earth and in outer space."
