"Keeping Horse" written by Glenn Balch, illustrated by Joseph Cellini, published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company, copyright 1966.
"Brad Jackson had mixed feelings when his cousin Billie stepped from the airliner on her first visit to the West. Had it been a boy arriving, he would have rejoiced, for summers could be lonely on the Jackson's Owyhee country ranch - but a girl and a dude Easterner besides! All the grownups seemed eager for Billie to have a good time, but why shouldn't she? thought Brad. Everyone said she was crazy about horses and there were plenty of those on HJ Ranch. One horse in particular, Captain Jack, was partly responsible for Brad's mood today. He had pictured himself winning blue ribbons at the Boise horse show with this fine-looking bay gelding he had persuaded his father to buy, but on the very first ride, and a number of times since, Captain Jack had bucked him off. Now even Brad had to admit that the handsome gelding showed signs of having been badly spoiled and there was no room on a working cow outfit for a headstrong, possibly dangerous horse."
During a summer packed with excitement, Billie, like Brad, becomes deeply involved in the fate of Caption Jack.
