"These Happy Golden Years" by Laura Ingalls Wilder with pictures by Garth Williams. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, copyright 1953.
In the last of the "Little House" books Laura, not yet sixteen, teaches school for the first time in an abandoned claim shanty, twelve miles from home. Though very homesick, she sticks out her term so Pa can keep Mary in the college for the blind. During vacations, she sees how well Mary is doing, and she enjoys sleigh rides, buggy rides, singing lessons, and helping Almanzo drive the wild colts. The next year Laura gets a job in a bright new schoolhouse and she and Almanzo become engaged. In the spring they marry and move to their own little house on a claim.
