Offering an extremely RARE original 1881 1st edition children’s book titled 'Good Times Prize Painting Book'. Illustration Lithographs by Dora Wheeler. Written by her mother Candace Wheeler. 65 pages. This drawing book has 8 colored lithograph illustrations and 30 line drawings to be colored. Beautiful Art &Crafts style illustrations throughout. This book has been reproduced recently. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL 1881 COPY.

Dora Wheeler Keith (1856–1940) née Dora Wheeler, also known as Mrs. Boudinot Keith, was a portrait artist, muralist, an illustrator for books and magazines, and designed tapestries for her mother Candace Wheeler's firm Associated Artists. Her mother, Candace Wheeler (1827-1923,) was a needlework artist and an important member of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Wheeler worked briefly for Tiffany and founded Associated Artists with Louis Comfort Tiffany, Samuel Coleman and Lockwood de Forest.

Amazingly, NONE of the line drawings have been colored. This book alone is VERY hard to find and unheard of to find without any coloring. The books intent was to provide illustrations to be colored with watercolors (the earliest coloring books) and sent in for a judged contest in 1883. I have included a copy of the 1st page explaining in detail which is quite interesting!

Excerpt from The Prize Painting Book: Good Times The paper has been expressly manufactured for water-color work. The outline designs have been drawn with a view to their being filled in with color. In a number of cases these outline pages are faced by their facsimiles, as colored by Miss Wheeler, and these color pages serve both to guide the worker and to render the book bright and attractive.
An interesting feature is the leaving one page entirely blank, that an original design, suited to the text on the opposite page, may be put upon it in such shape and color as the ingenuity and taste of the competitor may suggest.
The prizes will be awarded Sept. 1st, 1883, thus giving ample time for thorough work and any child, not over sixteen years of age, can compete for them.

The book still retains ALL pages. It has a Gift inscription inside "Lucy W. Soule from Grandmamma' The binding is fragile and broken although all the pages are still intact. The page hardboard covers and paper page edges are rough on the first 18 pages. Some age toning and a couple pages have 1"-1.5" tears, which has no effect on illustrations. A couple minor pencil marks. General edge wear. Contents are generally clean.

Measures 8" x 10"
