I am Offering a RARE set of VERY early GERMAN hand carved wooden putz cows for the advanced collector dating to the early 1800's (200 years old)! The last photo is a photograph from the beautiful reference book on early German Erzgebirge & Thuringia toys written by Maria & Dieter Leipold/ Susan Bickford. Charming set of cows are perfect for a nativity, a larger scaled dollhouse or alongside your favorite dolls!
Completely hand carved and painted. Much finer quality and much more character than later examples...note the detailing on the ears and tails. Some have horns, as well. Each ear and tail is a separate carved piece that fits snugly into the body. I can't say enough about these charming pieces. I am keeping some for myself but decided to share a few so someone else can love as well! Cows range in size from a diminutive 1.25"w x .75" tall to approx. 3" wide x 2.25" tall.
Really amazing condition considering the age and they were made to be played with by children! All stand freely EXCEPT the teensy one who is missing a couple legs (He would be perfect in a dollhouse toy shop)! Age appropriate wear to paint and one has a missing ear and another a horn.
I am in the process of listing MANY early German carved and composition figures from the early 1800's to early 1900's. Many fine examples from the regions of Erzgebirge, Grulich and Thuringia with be offered. I also have a set of sheep from the same time period available separately.
