An antique British Royal Navy Mess Plate with a crown and Mess No 8 in the center. The wide transfer border features the "Young Head" of Queen Victoria, whose reign was from 1837 - 1901. The "Young Head" indicates the plate was made in the earlier portion of her reign, and we estimate the date to be mid 1800s. The laurel wreathed medallions of Queen Victoria are interspersed with scenes of sailors who appear to be celebrating battle. The outer border is a rope, while the inner border is chain. The plate is 9 3/8" in diameter and has no chips or cracks, though there is overall crazing and some stray blue marks common to mid 19th century pottery.
The reverse of the plate is marked "W.W. Davies Birmingham" along with a very faint blue mark or name that we cannot decipher.
This is a fine plate of the collector of maritime or British naval items, or for collectors of hard to find blue and white transferware.
