Italian majolica (or, as it's called in Italy "maiolica" since there's no "j" in the Italian alphabet) has been around for centuries, and is used to denote the fabulous glaze and firing techniques used by Italian craftsmen. In France, this technique is called "faience". Modern majolica is different from antique in that it no longer uses a lead glaze as was the case in the 1800s. Modern majolica is safe for table use.
