A beautiful handleless cup or tea bowl and saucer in black transferware with an Oriental motif of a man and woman on a bridge with pagodas and a border of scrolls and roses. This set was made by the J Clementson pottery of the Phoenix and Bell Works, Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire, England. The Clementson pottery was in business from 1839-1864, and this set survives it's 1840s manufacture in very nice condition with no chips or cracks. The cup is 3" high with a top diameter of 3 5/8", and the saucer is 5 3/4" in diameter. The base of the cup is unmarked, but the saucer bears the Phoenix bird trademark with "Ironstone" above, the pattern name "Hyson" (though we believe it may well be "Hysong" with the "g" missing), and "J Clementson" beneath as shown in the photo.
