A rare Smithfield North Carolina pottery vase or pot. This pot has a black mirror glaze with a lava or volcanic glaze in an earthy green color, and you can see some brown "tobacco spit" under the black glaze on the rim. There is a grayish discoloration coming from underneath in a few areas, but no chips, cracks, or damage. The pot stands 7" high, 3 5/8" across the mouth opening, and the body is about 5 1/2" in diameter at its widest. This piece is a beauty. Weight before packing is 2 3/4 lbs.
The Smithfield Pottery was located in Johnston County, North Carolina and operated from 1927-1940 by Herman Cole.My understanding of Smithfield is that no pieces were marked, as is the case here. Known potters at Smithfield were Charlie Craven, Charles G Teague, Guy Daugherty, Herman Cole, Wren Cole, and Farrell Craven.
