A fine 19th century solid brass tall fireplace fender with attached coal or log catcher. Probably English in origin, this piece has a pierced or reticulated floral or grapevine pattern with curved sides and large hoof feet. It measures 36" wide, 9 1/8" tall, and 11 3/8" deep (including feet). The cast black metal sloped catcher was used to protect the hearth or floor from sparks, ashes, or even hot coals that might fall from the fire. This fender has been lovingly polished and has the rich patina of antique polished brass. There are some splits to the brass as pictured and a nickel size shallow dent--all of these add to the character and authenticity. Please note that any bluish coloration in the photos is simply light reflection.
