An extraordinary piece of opaline glass made by the C. F. Monroe company in their Wave Crest or Wavecrest line. This jardiniere was shown in their 1895-96 catalog, and Cohen's book on Wave Crest lists these pieces as "hard to find".
This jardiniere is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The raised dots around the rim and on the transfer decoration is intact, as is the decoration itself. Even the Moorish gilt trim around the rim is excellent. There is one bubble in the glass about the size of a tiny pea--this is part of manufacture and not considered a minus. This is very large, measuring just under 8" high, top diameter of 9" and 10" in diameter at its widest. It is unmarked, as is much of Monroe's decorated opal ware. It weighs 5 1/2 lbs. Whether you are an avid or beginning collector, this piece is so special and rare that you'll treasure it for a lifetime.
