A framed under glass Jacobi Re-Proof of the Rose Window in Rheims Cathedral, after an original color etching by J. Alphege Brewer. This is No. 8653 and has a signed authentication on the reverse as pictured and as stated below. It is difficult to photograph art that is under glass due to glare, so please excuse any white spots or reflection (oriental rug at the bottom).

Plate size is 13" x 20"; framed, the Re-Proof measures 16 3/4" x 22 1/2". The frame appears to be original to the print. Everything is in good order, although there is a tear to the paper backing. Campbell Prints, Inc. N.Y. appears in the lower right corner. Also on the reverse is the shield shaped sticker of Montgomery's The Best in Music & Art Portsmouth, NH. This music and art store began in 1865 and was in business as late as 1923, so we conclude that this print dates c. 1918 and the framing done shortly thereafter.

Information on the authentication states

"This magnificent work of art of the 13th century is considered on of the finest buildings in the Christian World. It is 446 feet long and 121 feet high.

Many historic events occurred in this old cathedral. Doubtless the most important in French history was the coronation of Charles VII.

During the late war this wonderful cathedral was badly damaged.

The shattered stained-glass window can never be replaced, for the glass was made several hundred years ago and the secret of the process is lost.

The artist of this charming subject, J. Alphege Brewer, was born at Kensington, England in 1883, and exhibits annually in the Royal Academy, London.

This re-proof is a facsimile of a signed proof etching printed in color. Color etchings are produced by rubbing the color into the plate, a process that is tedious and requiring great skill. A limited number of copies were pulled from the original plate and signed by the artist. This Re-Proof retains in a marked degree the subtle technic of the original and bears a facsimile of the artist's signature.

The public is cautioned against inferior imitations: genuine Re=Proofs are re-marked. - Jacobi"
