EARLY CHILDS ALPHABET ABC MUG
NURSERY TALES ~ LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD + WOLF
BROWNHILLS POTTERY CO
Staffordshire England ~ 1880
This 2 3/4" high x 2 3/4" diameter child's mug, excluding the applied handle has a crisp image transfer printed in rich chocolate brown with great four color polychrome hand painting, clobbering in shades of red, green, golden yellow and cobalt blue. The image is part of the Nursery Tales series coveted by collectors. This transfer, rarely if ever found on a mug, will be a special abc mug to add to any advanced collection.
In addition to the entire ABC alphabet transfer with the classic Brownhills decorative transfer, this plate has a central cartouche of Little Red Riding Hood encountering the Big Bad Wolf on her way to Grandmother's house.
Condition is excellent. It displays to perfection. There has been a professional restoration of a 1/4" hairline along the rim (in the vicinity of the space between the words "Nursery" and "Tales"), invisible to the naked eye. Otherwise, the mug is mint, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. A very rare mug, offered as is, priced reflecting the restoration.
Mugs like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. A lovely addition to your ABC collection.
