PEARLWARE CHILDRENS ALPHABET ABC PLATE
THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE
BROWNHILLS POTTERY CO
Staffordshire England ~ 1880
This 6 1/4 " plate has a crisp image transfer printed in rich chocolate brown with fabulous color polychrome hand painting, clobbering in shades of red and soft green.
In addition to the entire ABC alphabet transfer with the classic Brownhills decorative transfer, this plate has a central image of the confident Hare passing the steady Tortoise.
The Tortoise and the Hare is a fable attributed to Aesop. The story concerns a hare who one day ridiculed a slow-moving tortoise. In response, the tortoise challenged his swift mocker to a race. The hare soon left the tortoise far behind and, confident of winning, he decided to take a nap midway through the course. When he awoke, however, he found that his competitor, crawling slowly but steadily, had already won the race.
The moral is: Slow and steady wins the race.
Condition is excellent. Clean and bright, no wear. A feint beginnings of a hairline to the rear only.
Plates like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. A lovely addition to your ABC collection.
