Child's Transferware ABC Alphabet Plate
MONTHS of the YEAR ~~ OCTOBER
Staffordshire, England ~ c.1850
This fabulous early ABC plate, 6 1/4" in diameter with a crisp image transfer printed in a rich brownish-black with hand clobbering in yellow, red, and green. There is a twisted rope motif around the rim. The central image features the month of October, depicted as a man harvesting grapes. In the sky behind him is the astrological sign of the Scorpion (Scorpio). The plate made as part of a series featuring the 12 months and 4 seasons of the year. The plate is shown in the book Gifts for Good Children written by Noel Riley and published by Richard Dennis
Plates with images like this were made in the early to mid-19th century to aid in the education of young children.
The plate is in excellent condition. A spot of blue transfer paint along the rim from the pottery. The plate displays beautifully and is a fine throwback to a much simpler time in the history of children's education. The imaginative and intricate detailing would captivate any modern day child, too!
