EARLY DOUBLE ALPHABET ABC PLATE
Staffordshire England ~ c.1870
This 7 3/8" plate has a crisp image transfer printed in rich sepia brown with great three color polychrome hand painting, clobbering in shades of sky blue, light red and leaf green.
In addition to the entire ABC alphabet transfer along the perimeter of the plate, there is the entire alphabet transfered along the edge of the well of the plate. The wonderful scene is of a hidden village behind an old stone bridge. A river flows gently through the arc in the bridge as the native flora crowds near the banks. Delightful imagination !
Because of the rarely seen three color clobbering and this even harder to find double alphabet transfer, this will be a special abc plate in your collection.
Condition is excellent with a pearlware glaze. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines and no repairs.
Plates like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. A lovely addition to your ABC collection.
