EARLY ALPHABET ABC PLATE
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1850
This 7 3/8" alphabet plate has a crisp image transfer printed in rich black with hand clobbering in shades of cinnamon brown, bright yellow and cherry red. The plate feature an impressed border with the entire alphabet ~ A to Z, wrapped in a thin band of red. The plate has a thick pearlware glaze.
The central transfer is of men outside a pub drinking ale, squandering their time.
Dost thou love life, then do not squander time
There will be sleeping enough in the grave
Condition is excellent, a tiny nick off the footrim.
Plates like these were given as gifts to children on special occasions and were used as educational tools, as well. A lovely addition to your ABC collection.
