English Transferware
Childs Miniature Toy Plate
PAINTER ARTIST WITH EASEL & DOG
Staffordshire England c 1850

This miniature toy plate is part of a private collection belonging to a longstanding antiques dealer in New England. The plate was originally part of an early English child's or dolls toy tea set. The tiny plate measures 3 inches in diameter. Nicely potted, transfer printed in brown on creamy earthenware, finished with pearlware glaze. Decorated with the image of an artist painting with an easel and paintbrush while a spectator and dog stand by. Title ARTISTS. Exquisite naive folk art imagery, a beautiful example of early 19th century miniature genre scene transferware.

Typically, the plate is unmarked. It was most likely made in the Staffordshire region of England or possibly one of the northern potting regions of Britain. One of the earliest wares intended for children to play with, used to instruct them in proper table manners or for a playtime tea party or simply to decorate a dollhouse table. The image was originally in an illustrated children's book about trades and occupations published in the early part of the nineteenth century..

The tiny plate is in good overall condition with a tight hairline at 7 o'clock, as shown in the photos, and no chips other cracks or repairs. Crudely made; ponded glaze, stilt marks and other minor typical firing imperfections. A great example of early miniature antique ceramics, elegant in its simplicity with earthy and whimsical scenes of country life - a fine miniature to add to your miniature tansferware collection or any AAFA Americana advanced collection! We have also listed other pieces from this collection along with other early toy transferware and other irresistible and quirky ceramic gifts for children of all ages. Sold as is.
