Rare Childs Miniature Tea Set for Two

GAUDY IMARI FLOW

Staffordshire England c 1840

This is a rare miniature childs tea set made to accessorize an elegant Victorian dollhouse. The child-size set is made of early English soft paste earthenware (not porcelain and not ironstone) transfer printed in brown with a Gaudy Imari motif and palette featuring a large urn of flowers on a rock table, set within a floral cartouche. The pieces have remarkably fine hand clobbering painted with enamel iron red orange ochre and cobalt flow blue, with a caramel rim. The set is a stunning example of early 19th century miniature gaudy chinoiserie transferware. The pattern type, made by various potteries in adult sizes but very rare in miniature, is usually called POONAH. It bears a strong resemblance to Masons Ironstone in the Table and Vase pattern. The form is similar to a Minton Amherst Japan miniature tea set.

Various pieces in the set are signed with a hand painted pattern mark 664 inside a printed scroll, and some pieces have impressed coded numerals. The maker is unknown and has not been documented. Based on form and style, the set would appear to have been made by Minton, although possibly Frances Morley (Morley Ashworth) during the transition years when Morley Ashworth began manufacturing Masons Ironstone.

The set comprises:
• Teapot with Lid, 4-1/2 inches tall, 7 inches long, with inset lid, floral finial and finely molded handle
• Sugar box with Lid, 3-1/2 inches tall with finely molded handles and floral finial (wear to foot rim)
• Cream pitcher, 2-1/4 inches tall with molded handle and wide scalloped spout (fine hairline at top of handle)
• 2 round cups, 1-1/2 inches tall, and
• 2 saucers, 4-1/2 inches in diameter (fine short hair line on back side of one saucer

The set is in outstanding condition with just the minor issues described above and no other chips cracks or repairs. Offered as is, as described and as shown, a superb set to finish an early doll display and a perfect addition to an advanced collection of miniature flow blue gaudy imari patterns.
