Scarce Colorful Creamware Childs Plate
Patience Hope HAPPYNESS Contentment Virtue
Staffordshire England c1800
Dating to the late 18th or start of the 19th century, this childs plate measures 6-1/2 inches in diameter. Transfer printed in black and decorated with a Leeds or Pratt color range of ochre iron red and enamel greens and yellow. The creamware plate is encircled with moulded flowers and finished with iron red rim and pearlware glaze.
The center of the plate bears a cartouche containing a religious maxim or motto:
“Patience will wipe away the streaming tear, Whilst hope will paint the pallid cheek of fear. Content will allways Happyness supply. And virtue call a blessing from on high.”
A peaceful and instructive message to teach children the joys of family and God. The plate is unmarked except for a hand painted decorators mark. It is most likely from Staffordshire or one of the northern potting regions of England c. 1790-1810. The plate is in great condition with signs of only light wear along the iron red rim consistent with age and no chips cracks or repairs. Clean and bright, appears to have been cherished by its original owner. Light weight and beautifully potted.
