Childs Transferware Teapot
HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE ~ CAT FIDDLE COW MOON
Whittaker & Co Staffordshire England 1888
This is a wonderful child's transferware toy teapot, circa 1888. Originally part of a complete miniature children's tea set, the lidded pot stands 4 inches tall and measures 5-3/4 inches long. The transfer is a rich country blue. The teapot depicts the characters in the much beloved child's nursery rhyme that wraps around the top rim of the pot:
HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE, THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON, THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED TO SEE SUCH CRAFT,
AND THE DISH RAN AWAY WITH THE SPOON
The teapot was made in Hanley in the Staffordshire region of England by Whitaker and Co. as part of its Nursery Rhymes series. The maker's mark on the underside bears the registration number 103739, indicating the year 1888.
The teapot is in great condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks, original to the making. Slight wear to the tip of the spout, consistent with prior use. The teapot is well potted and the transfer is richly detailed, a joy to behold!
Nursery rhyme tea sets from this era are hard to find and quite desirable. The influence of the Aesthetic Movement is evident in the design. The piece will make a fabulous addition to your collection of children's dishes or Aesthetic transferware. It is being sold without a reserve, as is.
