Rare Scottish Pearlware Pottery Bird Feeder with Songbird Finial c1820 Pratt Ware
This is a very rare Scottish pearlware pottery bird feeder with the pierced dome surmounted by a figure of a singing bird above a border of molded shells. The pedestal in a dotted plaid grid pattern, enamelled in green and red. It stands 4-1/2 inches tall and dates to 1820.
The provenance of the feeder is the collection of London ceramics dealer Aurea Carter who passed away in 2017. To see a similar bird feeder decorated in blue, green and ochre, please refer to John & Griselda Lewis, ‘Pratt Ware: English and Scottish relief decorated and underglaze coloured earthenware 1780-1840,’ page 248.
The feeder is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Minor wear to the tip of the bird’s beak, and some minor grunge inside.
A wonderful surprise for Christmas morning.
