Child's Transferware Plate
HEY DIDDLE CAT & FIDDLE
Whittaker & Co Staffordshire England 1888
This is a wonderful child's transferware toy plate, circa 1888. The plate measures 4-3/4 inches in diameter transfer printed in cobalt blue, depicting the characters in the much beloved child's nursery rhyme:
HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE, THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE, THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON, THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED, TO SEE SUCH CRAFT, AND THE DISH RAN AWAY WITH THE SPOON
The plate was made in Hanley in the Staffordshire region of England by Whitaker and Co. as part of its Nursery Rhymes series. The plate is marked with the maker's backstamp and registration number 103739, indicating the year 1888. The image on the plate was taken from a children's book titled Favourite Rhymes for the Nursery published in London by Thomas Nelson in 1870.
The plate has no chips cracks or repairs. Minor utensil wear. Stilt marks and a couple of tiny stray dots of dust and excess glaze on the front, minor transfer imperfections original to the making, and fine overall glaze crazing and edge wear typical of Victorian childrens wares and consistent with the age of the piece. Not fine pottery and not intended to be, as it was made for childs play and considered disposable., which makes it all the more collectable This plate is a joy to behold, the centerpiece for any kids’ room.
Nursery rhyme imagery from this era is hard to find and quite desirable. The influence of the Aesthetic Movement is evident in the design. The piece will make a fabulous addition to your collection of children's dishes or Aesthetic transferware.
