Rare Miniature American Presidential Historical Staffordshire Sugar Box

William Henry Harrison ~ Columbian Star

John W Ridgway Staffordshire England 1840

This is a scarce early American historical Staffordshire blue transfer printed covered sugar box or sucrier, originally part of a complete childs tea set in the Columbian Star pattern made in miniature child size, for playtime tea parties with dolls and friends and to support the political campaigns of the parents’ candidate. The tiny lidded pot is transfer printed with a pearlware glaze. This six-sided hexagonal ironstone sugar pot stands 4 inches tall and measures 4 inches across.

The central image scene on the pot is a man carrying wood on the land surrounding a log cabin. It has a star-spangled border with a wreath of laurel leaves.

The piece was made by John W Ridgway in Staffordshire England for export to the United States, to celebrate the successful 1840 presidential campaign of William Henry Harrison. The Whig party had used a log cabin as the symbol of his campaign, to sell him to the voters as a rugged frontier hero and man of the people, exploiting his history of fighting Indians at the battle of Tippecanoe.

The sugar is unmarked except for an impressed W. The pattern is identified in the 1982 book PRESIDENTIAL AND CAMPAIGN MEMORABILIA by Stan Gores. Some pieces found in the childs size and adult size are marked the Columbian Star pattern name, the date October 28, 1840 (the date of Harrison’s election) or a plain impressed ‘John Ridgway’ mark on the base. After the election, the adult size pieces were widely distributed as political china. These miniature pieces are far less common.

The sugar is in great condition with an old chip inside the lid, and no other chips, cracks or repairs. Glaze resist and tiny glaze pops on base, original to the making. Nice example in fine condition. A prize for any collector of presidential commemoratives or for a collector of American historical transfer printed ceramics.
