English Majolica Miniature Dolls 3-pc Dessert Set
probably Edge & Malkin ~ Staffordshire England c1870
This fantastic miniature dessert set trio is a stunning and scarce Majolica green glazed toy dish set, circa 1870. Originally part of a complete miniature childrens dinner service or antique dollhouse accessory, the tiny pedestal or comport stands 3 inches tall and measures 5 inches round with a deep molded center well; the pair of matching oval serving plates measures 4-3/4 inches long with the same decorative edge, impressed as a flower glazed all in a brilliant green majolica glaze.
The English maker Edge Malkin & Co made these majolica sets for adults and children, as did various makers in France. The set is marked with the letter Z. The exact maker of this set and the origin is unknown.
The set is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs but it has some typical firing imperfections consistent with age including stilt mark on foot rim, underglaze rim indentation, kiln dust etc. Darkened crazing on back of one plate consistent with prior use. These tiny childrens or dolls Majolica plates are like pocket sized works of art. A sweet example, and an ideal mantle piece for a doll house living room. Offered as is, as shown.
