Miniature Childs Transferware Cup and Saucer Set

ANIMALS

Copeland (late Spode) Stoke-on-Trent England c 1880

This is a stunning child's earthenware miniature cup and saucer set. It is transfer printed in a brilliant blue green teal or turquoise. Originally part of a complete children's tea service meant for dollhouse play, the cup stands 2 inches tall with a London shaped handle; the saucer measures 4-1/2 inches in diameter. The decoration consists of a parade of domestic animals and wild critters, with 5 individual transfer printed animals parading around the saucer and 6 more on the cup – 4 dogs (greyhound terrier spaniel and wolfhound) chicken or hen, quail, a wolf goose cow deer and rabbit. The ultimate zoological guide and quadrupeds teaching tool on ceramic! Impeccably designed and boldly decorated to inspire the imagination of every child. This delectable pattern is featured in Playtime Porcelain and Pottery by Lorraine Punchard, English Toy China by Doris Lechler, and Gifts for Good Children Part II by Maureen Batkin. The whimsical transfers each measure about 3/4 inches - 1 inch in size.

The base is marked with a transfer printed and impressed Copeland Late Spode dating to the 1880s. It was made in Stoke in the Staffordshire region of England, the highest quality transferware, suitable for adult tastes and standards.

The set in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks and typical minor firing imperfections. The set is earthy quirky and uniquely charming a naive and playful piece that would have been treasured by a lucky child over 100 years ago. Children's folk art transferware of this quality is quite scarce and this pattern is especially rare and sought after. This delicious little set will make a special addition to any collection of doll house or children's wares, and makes a perfect gift to a veterinarian , farmer, zoologist , dog trainer or other animal lover!
