Rare Wedgwood Miniature Toy Platter

Palmer Cox BROWNIES Designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones

Staffordshire England 1913

This rare English pottery miniature platter or serving tray measures 4-1/4 inches long and 3-1/8 inches across. Transfer printed in brown and hand painted (under the glaze) in bright orange cocoa and green and a green outlined rim. Marked with an impressed ‘WEDGWOOD’ mark, a printed ‘WEDGWOOD – ETRURIA ENGLAND’ and a painter’s mark that reads C.4400/D.

The plate features a highly colorful and whimsical Brownie riding a bicycle and another Brownie sitting on the ground. The caption reads “ Get Up Silly !” These imaginary little characters also known as sprites imps and gnomes were originally invented by Palmer Cox (1840-1924). They are merry elves who delight in playing harmless pranks and helpful deeds, working and playing while weary households sleep, never seen by mortal eyes. These mischievous but kindhearted characters starred in books, cartoons, and children's china and toys, becoming a childhood favorite for generations.
This platter was part of a childs miniature fantasy play dinner set designed by artist Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881-1945) who was famed for her Fairyland Lustre designs that she created later in her career at Wedgwood. Her Brownies designs were first produced in 1913.

The plate is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks original to the making. A fantastic pocket size work of art designed to entertain children 100 years ago. A rare little toy, part of a series of images of whimsical and naughty Brownies.
