EARLY ORIGINAL TIN LITHO TEA SET with TRAY
RED KRAZY KAT
J. Chein and Co. USA c1940s
This original tin litho toy tea set comes with teapot with original lid, open sugar, cream pitcher, 3 plates, 3 cups and saucers, and serving tray. For scale the tray measures 7-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. The set is marked with the earliest mark from the maker, dating the set to c1940. Made in America for tea parties with children and their dolls, this miniature childs set is highly sought after in a brilliant shade of red, the scarcest color that the set was made in.
Beautifully decorated with Krazy Kat and friends in the midst of a raucous tea party, showing them pouring and sipping tea from this very tea set. Friends include a cow and a pig, shown on the spectacular tin lithograph tray.
The ultimate comic strip characters, Krazy and Ignatz, debuted in 1913 as the family cat and mouse who lived in the home of the Dingbat Family in Kokonino Kounty (Arizona), created by George Herriman. The characters' antics are often praised for their mixture of surrealism, innocent playfulness and poetic language. Krazy is likely the precursor to Micky Mouse and Felix the Cat. Krazy and his friends have been recreated in toys by many manufacturers, but these tin litho tea sets made by J. Chein are among the most popular and everlasting. Chein had an exclusive contract with Woolworths for the sale of these tea sets, and they became a very popular toy and gift throughout America, originally selling for $.49 boxed and complete.
The set is in great condition, with only minor age and use related wear. The handle of one cup is detached at the bottom screw, very minor dents and interior paint fading. No rust or breaks. The photos show the details. Offered as is, as shown, a rare addition to any collection of early tin litho children's tea wares.
