Rare Child's Gaudy Flow Blue Wagon Wheel Tea Set TEAPOT

Charles Allerton and Sons Staffordshire, England c 1875

This is a child’s or dollhouse toy teapot, circa 1875, made for children's teatime play or for a dollhouse.

The covered pitcher is made of soft paste earthenware. Octagonal in shape, it stands 5 1/4 inches tall with a square handle. It measures 6 inches across.

The teapot is decorated with a hand painted motif called WAGON WHEEL. Cobalt flow blue spokes alternating with iron red feather brushstroke embellished with copper lustre. The colors are incredibly striking, a fine example of the ceramic folk art tradition. The flowing also shows on the back side of each piece, probably due to the pieces being stacked in the kiln.

It was made by Charles Allerton and Sons, a pottery in the Staffordshire district of England, known for its whimsical children's teasets. The set has no maker’s mark except for a painted numeral 93 signifying the paint decorator.

The teapot is in great condition, especially considering its age and use by generations of children. It has no chips cracks or repairs. The piece was hand decorated, so there is variation in the painting adding to the unique naïve charm of the set. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not aligned neatly, there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Offered as shown and as described.

A beautiful teapot, richly detailed, amazing that it belonged to a child well over 100 years ago!
