Rare Childs Transferware Plate
GOAT & Cat with Ball of Yarn
after Kate Greenaway Staffordshire England c 1880
This exceptional children's transferware plate dates to 1880. The plate measures 5-1/4 inches in diameter. Originally part of a complete childs tea set, the teapot is of unknown origin. Resembling the nursery wares of Charles Allerton it was likely made by that or another pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England during the 1880s, a period of whimsical children's tea sets influenced by the Aesthetic movement love of nature and the style and characters of Kate Greenaway. We have not found this motif in standard reference books on the subject of English ceramics and/or childrens tea and table wares.
The plate features a beautiful billy goat, and a tiny whimsy of a child knitting while a cat plays with her ball of yard, all drawn in the style of Kate Greenaway. This endearing plate makes a wonderful addition for a fanciful collection and would complement Charles Allerton’s Little Mae patterns. We have separately listed 2 other plates from the same series, one with a sheep and the other with playful naughty children.
The plate is in overall great condition. No chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks and other minor imperfections - glaze ponding, transfer wrinkles, kiln dust - all original to the making and consistent with the typical naïve 19th century childrens' wares. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons people collect these wares. Not fine china, nor was it meant to be; it’s for kids, and probably considered disposable. Silt in the pottery, glazed over dips and bumps, all these are cases of factory indifference. The transfers are somewhat crude and primitive in application, adding to their folksy charm. Kate Greenaway images on transferware are hard to find and highly sought after, especially in sets. This little piece will make a stunning collection, or add them to any existing collection of toys and children's ware. Offered as is.
We have listed other whimsical childrens transferware and have much more in stock. Please let us know if you are looking for a special gift. We are always happy to combine shipping of multiple purchases.
