Rare Pratt Pearlware Childs Plate
Staffordshire England c1820
Dating to the start of the 19th century, this childs plate measures 6-1/2 inches in diameter with a gently scalloped rim, the plate is transfer printed or bat printed in sepia brown and decorated with a Pratt color range, ochre iron red and enamel greens and yellow. The plate is encircled with moulded flowers and finished with pearlware glaze.
The center of the plate contains a cartouche containing the spiritual and religious maxim or motto known as the GOLDEN RULE:
BE YE TO OTHERS KIND AND TRU AS YOU’D HAVE OTHERS BE TO YOU AND NEITHER SAY NOR DO TO THEM WHATE’ER YOU WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN
A bit wisdom for the ages, an instructive message to teach children the joys of kindness. The plate is unmarked. It is most likely from Staffordshire or one of the northern potting regions of England c 1820. The plate is in great condition with signs of wear along the iron red rim consistent with age and no chips cracks or repairs. Clean and bright, appears to have been cherished by its original owner. Light weight and beautifully potted.
