American Historical Staffordshire Childs Plate
TEMPERANCE IS THE PARENT OF DOMESTIC HAPPINESS
Staffordshire England c 1825
This early historical Staffordshire childs plate measures just 5-1/4 inches in diameter with a pink lustre painted scalloped rim. Black transfer print on a creamy earthenware blank with a molded floral border, four-color paint decorated and pearlware glaze. The plate is decorated with text from the early anti-alcohol Temperance Movement which began in England and New England in the 1820s. The banner reads:
TEMPERANCE IS THE PARENT OF SOBRIETY HEALTH PROSPERITY INDUSTRY MODESTY PRUDENCE HUMILITY CHEERFULNESS TRANQUILITY CONTENTMENT PIETY DOMESTIC HAPPINESS
The engraving is stunning with impeccable detailing, a work of art on ceramic, with simple spiritual wisdom that is as timely today as when it was first spoken.
The plate was made the Staffordshire region of England from early to mid-19th century. It is in very good condition, with a nick on the rim at 9 o’clock and no other chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks and transfer smudging, original to the making, and other wear to the rim and foot consistent with age. Minor glazing crazing consistent with age and firing. A fine example of early plates used to teach lessons to school children and given as a warning of good conduct and reward for merit. The design is elegant and striking, making it a wonderful addition to any collection of transferware maxims mugs and plates, or any collection of early American history. Offered as is, as shown.
