Childs Flow Blue Polychrome Ironstone Tea Set CANDIA Wedgwood & Co Staffordshire England c1860
Childs Flow Blue Polychrome Ironstone Tea Set
Wedgwood & Co Staffordshire England c1860
This childs tea set dates to circa 1860. Transfer printed in mulberry flow blue and embellished with a rich polychrome palette of red gold and blue. The floral motif features a big chrysanthemum flower in the center surrounded by branches of flowering trees with a lustre decorative border. The pattern name is CANDIA, probably named for the glorious botanical gardens in the Kingdom of Candia, an island of Crete and then colony of the Republic of Venice.
Made for dollhouse play, the petite paneled ironstone set is marked with the pattern name and the imprint of the maker, Wedgwood & Co. (formerly Podmore & Walker). The pieces also have a hand painted decorators’ pattern number 910. The set comprises:
• Teapot with lid, 4 inches tall, 6 inches long, with steam hole in lid • Sugar with lid, 3-3/4 inches tall, 4 inches across • Four cups, 1-3/4 inches tall with London handle (1 cup with tight rim crack) and • Four saucers, 4 inches in diameter.
The set is in great good condition with only the minor issue mentioned above and no other chips, cracks or repairs. The transfers are not aligned neatly, there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and firing frits original to the making. Miniature mulberry flow blue polychrome transfer printing in this uncommon pattern will make a wonderful addition to any collection.
