Childs Pearlware Verst Plate

BE GRATEFUL TO THY FATHER

Staffordshire, England c 1830

This is a very early childs transfer printed plate made of a soft paste earthenware glazed with a pearlware glaze. The diminutive plate measures 6 inches in diameter. The rim is decorated with an intricate molded border of netted swags alternating with transfer printed floral snippets encircling a inner scrolled ring of black which surrounds the central image of a seated man reading and the beautiful and sentimental verse honoring a loving father:

Be grateful to thy Father for he it is that provideth for thee.

Hear the words of his mouth for they are spoken for thy good.

Give hear to his admonition for it proceedeth from love.

The plate is unmarked. It hails from a pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region or possibly a northern potting region of England in the early to mid1800s.

Plates like these were given as gifts for good children, for a special occasion or rewards of merit, and were also used to aid in the education of young children.

The plate is in only fair condition, with a reglued piece at 4 o’clock, mostly obscured in the surrounding decoration, as shown in the detail photos. No other chips cracks or repairs. Typical nineteenth century firing imperfections original to the making. Signs of wear, as expected. A very rare plate with a beautiful verse, offered as is.
