Child's Polychrome Tea Set
BIRDS & GARDEN FLOWERS ~ ORNITHOLOGY & BOTANY
Minton Staffordshire England c. 1850
This child's tea set or doll house tea party service is a stunning and scarce hand colored, transfer printed toy, circa 1850. The set is transfer printed with hand painted colorful exotic birds with brilliant flowers exuberantly hand colored over the glaze in bright enamel paints with red, orange, yellow, green and blue palette. The rim is hand outlined in iron reddish brown.
The set is has various signature marks including the decorators & pattern code 3/4552 and 4553, BB the Best Body trademark and other tiny tally marks. The set was made by Minton, a fine 19th century pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England. The same childs tea set decorated with butterflies is discussed and shown on page 74 in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK and US.
The set comprises:
- Teapot with lid, 5” high, 6 1/2" long (reglued handle, small reglued chip on tip of spout, edge glaze flaking) - Sugar with lid, 4” high, 4 1/2" across (small flakes on underside of handles, small edge chip under edge, spoon ding) - Creamer, 3 1/2" high (shallow edge chip, edge flakes) - Waste Bowl, 2 1/2" high, 4” across - Cake plate with moulded handles, 5 1/4" across, and - 5 cups and saucers, 2” high, 4 1/4" across (crack inside 1 cup)
The set is in very good overall condition with only the minor damage issues mentioned above. Stilt marks, original to the making, and utensil wear consistent with age and prior use. The set is an outstanding example of a rare pattern. Children's hand decorated tablewares of this quality are quite scarce and highly sought after. Animal and bird transferware collectors will adore the tiny set! A superb example of an early doll’s tea set, very hard to find this pattern in a nearly complete set. Offered as is.
