Scarce Miniature Childs Marine Blue Green Transferware
ANIMALS Cup & Saucer Set
Copeland Late Spode Stoke-on-Trent England c. 1890
This is a stunning children's earthenware miniature cup and saucer, transfer printed in a brilliant marine blue green. Originally part of a complete children's tea set, the round cup stands 1 3/4" high with a London shaped handle. The saucer measures 4 5/8" in diameter.
The decoration consists of a parade of farm animals and wild critters, with 5 individual transfer printed animals on the cup and on the saucer, parading around the perimeter -- including leopard zebra camel stag deer dog quail wolf and goose, designed and boldly decorated to inspire the imagination of every child. This delectable pattern is featured in Playtime Porcelain and Pottery by Lorraine Punchard, English Toy China by Doris Lechler, and Gifts for Good Children Part II by Maureen Batkin. The whimsical transfers each measure about 1" in size.
The set is marked with a transfer printed and impressed "WT Copeland and Sons Stoke on Trent England" with a registration mard dating to the late 1880s. These wares are the highest quality transferware, suitable for adult tastes and standards.
The set is in very good condition with a nick on the cup's foot rim and no other chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks and other minor typical firing imperfections. Earthy and uniquely charming naive wares. It is amazing that the set belonged to a child over 100 years ago! Offered as is.
Children's folk art transferware of this quality is quite scarce and this pattern is especially rare and sought after. These delicious little tea wares will make a special addition to any collection of children's wares, and makes a perfect gift to a veterinarian farmer zoologist dog trainer or other animal lover!
